Nilgun Kulpe was working on the top floor of the CTV building in Christchurch, as a counsellor at Relationship Services – dealing with victims of quake stress – when the quake hit.

On 22 February 2011 Christchurch was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake and the CTV, (Canterbury Television) Building collapsed killing 16 staff members and destroying all of CTV’s equipment.

She described the collapse as like “being in an elevator”, and being “completely gobsmacked” to discover that she just had plummeted five stories.

Of the 166 confirmed dead by 12 March 2011, 94 were recovered from the CTV building. Many of the dead and missing were faculty and students at the King’s Education school for English language, located on the third floor of the CTV building

“One of the most spectacular survival miracles of February 22 last year occurred when some workers on the fifth floor collapsed with the building and found themselves alive on the ground floor.”  Nilgun included “We have a baby up here!” “Will that make them come any faster to save us,” she wonders.

Nilgun had planned a six-month world trip before the earthquake initially thinking it would have to be canned.

“A miracle has happened and I have not survived to abandon my dreams. More than ever it is time to live NOW”  Watch Nilgun tell her story on The End of Life Matters video –    Trypheyna McShane talks with Nilgun Kulpe about her miraculous life and death encounter, and how her experience has taught her to “never give up on your dreams’
